How to Prepare for Your First Family Portrait Session with a Newborn

Welcoming a newborn into your family is one of life’s most profound and tender moments. Your first family portrait session isn’t just about capturing how small their toes are or how sweetly they sleep—it’s about preserving the feeling of this fleeting season. It’s a way to honor the love that’s grown and the new story you’ve begun together.

If you’re feeling a little nervous or unsure about how to get ready, know that you’re not alone. This step-by-step guide is designed to help you prepare with ease and confidence—so you can focus less on logistics, and more on enjoying the beautiful experience of being photographed with your newest love.

Step 1: Schedule the Session Ahead of Time

Book during your third trimester if possible.

The best time for newborn photos is within the first 7–21 days after birth. Babies are still extra sleepy and curly, making for those cozy, timeless shots. We'll choose a tentative date and adjust as needed once your baby arrives.

Step 2: Choose a Location That Feels Right for You

Home sessions are a favorite for newborn portraits.

They're relaxed, natural, and meaningful—no packing up the baby, no harsh lighting, just the comfort of your own space. We’ll use the best window light and create a cozy corner where everyone feels at ease.

Step 3: Keep Outfits Soft and Simple

Stick to neutral tones and cozy textures.

Think creams, beiges, soft grays, or pastels. Avoid logos or bold patterns that can distract. A swaddle or a clean white onesie for baby is perfect. I’ll send you a style guide and help coordinate your family's look so everything flows beautifully.

Step 4: Warm Up the Room

Babies love warmth—it helps them stay sleepy and content.

Before I arrive, turn up the heat slightly or use a space heater near our photo spot. This little detail makes a big difference in keeping baby calm during the session.

Step 5: Feed Baby Just Before We Begin

A full belly = a happy baby.

Try to time a feeding 20–30 minutes before our session starts. If your baby needs to nurse or bottle-feed during the shoot, no worries—we’ll pause, cuddle, and keep everything relaxed.

Step 6: Don’t Stress About the House

You just had a baby—no one expects perfection.

When I arrive, I’ll help you choose the best location with great light and minimal clutter. A tidy bed, a soft blanket, or a simple couch can make a stunning backdrop. You don’t need to deep-clean—I promise.

Step 7: Give Yourself a Moment to Get Ready

Yes, mama—you deserve to feel good in these photos too.

Take a little time to freshen up, put on something that makes you feel comfortable and confident, and maybe even sip a hot coffee while I set up. These images are just as much about your journey as they are about your baby’s.

Step 8: Go With the Flow

Babies cry. Toddlers squirm. That’s okay.

I take a baby-led, no-pressure approach. We’ll take breaks, follow your baby’s cues, and keep things gentle. Sometimes the most heartfelt photos happen in the in-between moments—when you’re holding your little one close, rocking softly, or sharing a quiet smile with your partner.

You’ll Never Regret Capturing This Season

The newborn phase is fleeting. Your first family portraits will be treasured not only by you—but by your children one day, too. As your photographer, I’m here to make the experience easy, peaceful, and full of love.
